Proof 1850 Quarter Dollars are exceedingly rare, with only three or four examples known at present. The finest of the bunch is an amazingly toned example in NGC PR68 from the John Jay Pittman and Phil Kaufman collections. Another example in NGC PR65 originated in an 1850 Proof set in the Bibliothegue Nationale in Paris; that coin was traded out of the set in 1986 for French coins needed for the museum. Some of the 1850 Proof coins from the still still remain there, including a Proof 1850 Double Eagle.
