The 2016-P Shawnee National Forest Quarter (#597026) was the 31st issue in the America the Beautiful Quarters program and the first release of its calendar year. Officially entering circulation on February 1, 2016, the coin honors a vast 289,000-acre wilderness located in Southern Illinois, tucked between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.
To represent the park's unique topography, Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Justin Kunz depicted the Camel Rock formation found within the "Garden of the Gods." In a nod to the area’s rich biodiversity, the design includes lush park vegetation in the foreground while a red-tailed hawk soars high above the landscape.
Beyond its release as a circulating coin through normal business channels, the United States Mint offered collectors several options to purchase uncirculated examples:
Strike quality is generally high for the 2016-P Shawnee National Forest Quarter; however, incidental contact marks and hairline scratches often prevent most examples from grading higher than PCGS MS66.
While the dense vegetation on the reverse can occasionally conceal minor marks, the open fields and the elevated relief on Washington’s hair, neck, cheek, and forehead offer no such camouflage. Flashy coins possessing original mint luster without abrasions in these key focal areas are prime candidates for higher grades, making them highly desirable for PCGS Set Registry collectors.
