Ron Guth:

The 1844 Half Dollar is one of the more common dates from the 1840s, though it is not as common as the 1840 Reverse of 1839 or the 1843. Mint State examples are scarce, not plentiful, and the typical grades are MS-63 and MS-64. Surprisingly, this is one of only two dates from the 1840s where PCGS has not certified an example in MS-65 or better condition (the 1845 is the other). Most examples are well struck; some show spidery cracks connecting some of the letters in the legends on the reverse.
