Ron Guth:
With only 625 Proofs minted, the 1867 Half Dollar is scarce by any measures. Nonetheless, at least a third -- if not more -- of the original mintage survives and most are in perfectly acceptable grades. Most examples we've seen are in a range from PR62 to PR64, with some outliers on both sides. Gems are very scarce and anything PR66 or better falls into the Condition Census. Approximately one-fourth of all Proof 1867 Half Dollars are Cameos and fewer than a dozen are known as Deep Cameos. For this year, the quality of the production was high, so collectors have lots of opportunities to purchase nice, problem-free examples.
