Ron Guth:

The Proof 1838 No Drapery, Large Stars Dime is exceedingly rare -- in fact, it may be unique. Breen lists two old appearances -- one from 1946, the other from 1963 -- but neither coin was plated in the sales cited by him. The only example to appear in modern times is an NGC PR67CAM formerly owned by Phil Kaufman (who put together and incredible collection of Seated Liberty Proof coin), then by Eugene Gardner. In it's three auction appearances over a six year period, this single coin realized a price in the $160,000 range each time.

It seems unlikely that Mint employees struck only one Proof of this date, but until another example appears on the market, this is the only one available to collectors.
