Jaime Hernandez:

In 2023-P the U.S. Mint struck an interesting Lincoln Cent variety. The variety is known as the “Extra V” variety, as some 2023-P Lincoln Cents have been found with an extra “V’ letter, to the right of the V.D.B. initials on the obverse of the coin.

It is somewhat of a unique variety, as no other Lincoln Cent varieties have had a “V’ letter misplaced before. The variety is believed to have originated from a modified hub, which in return struck at least one die. That die more than likely also struck thousands if not tens of thousands of these coins or more, as modern coin dies can strike hundreds of thousands of coins or more per each set of dies.

Regardless of how or why the variety was produced, it is an interesting variety and it remains to be seen how scarce and popular the variety will be in the future.
