Ron Guth:

Though called "Restrikes", the 1850 Baldwin & Co. copies were made at some subsequent date (Breen believes 1906-1910) from dies that are broadly similar to the originals, but upon closer examination, show substantive differences. In particular, the fonts used for the legends on the copies are completely different from those on the originals. On the copies, the vaquero's lasso is a single loop whereas, on the originals, the lasso is made up of two loops. Originals have a reeded edge; the copies have plain edges.

The Baldwin & Co. copies were made in a variety of metals, including gold, silver, copper, brass, lead, and white metal. Gilt copper (or bronze) are also known to exist. All of the metal variants are very rare and all are extremely popular with collectors.
