Ulex Collection - Lyman Low 7/1902:525, $22.50 - S.H. & H. Chapman - George H. Earle Collection - Henry Chapman 6/1912:3783, $160 - Virgil Brand Collection - John Jay Pittman Collection, who purchased the coin “for $125 sometime prior to 1950” (per Akers) - David Akers 10/23/1997:1260, $71,500 |
This unusual piece was struck in copper using the same dies that were used to strike the regular 1855 Kellogg & Co. $50 gold pieces. The only known example was owned by collectors George Earle, Virgil Brand, and John Jay Pittman. It's current whereabouts are unknown to us. This coin turned out to be an excellent investment for Mt. Pittman and his heirs. According to David Akers, Pittman purchased the coin in the 1950's for $125 (which was less than the $160 that Virgil Brand paid for the coin decades earlier). When this coin appeared in the 1997 sale of the Pittman collection, it sold for $71,500. A second example has been rumored to exist, but both Akers and Kagin discounted that rumor.
