Ron Guth:

The 1878 VAM 44 is one of the most dramatic varieties in the Morgan Dollar series. It is extremely popular with collectors and the demand far outstrips the supply. As a result, it has become one of the most sought-after and valuable varieties in the VAM world. The obverse die shows clear triple striking in the area of the cotton bolls and adjacent leaves. Mint State examples are exceedingly rare, and most are at the lower end of the scale (MS61 to MS62). The finest example is a single PCGS MS63. Prooflike examples are an even smaller subset of the total population and we are unaware of any Deep Mirrror Prooflikes.
