This year the Mint issued two different Commemorative Silver Dollar designs to commemorate Benjamin Franklin. It issued the Franklin Scientist and Benjamin Franklin Founding Father design. Both designs were issued to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's birth.

Obverse: The obverse of the Franklin Scientist design features Benjamin Franklin holding a kite as it was used in some of his experiments. The obverse has the inscriptions, Liberty, 1706 - 2006, Benjamin Franklin Scientist, and In God We Trust."

Reverse: The reverse of the coin shows a severed snake with the initials of several states and the words "Join, or Die." indicating that the colonies could only survive if they were united. the reverse also has the inscriptions, "United States of America, E Pluribus Unum and One Dollar."
