1816 Newcomb 9 is a scarce variety (John Wright called it R3- and Bill Noyes called it R3). Mint State examples are very rare, with less than a handful known to exist. The finest example is a PCGS MS65RB. In the Noyes reference, he plates a coin that is now in a PCGS MS63BN holder.
This variety has a large center dot on the obverse (diagnostic) and a tiny center dot on the reverse. Early states show a good strike and strong denticles. As the dies wear, flowlines appear on both sides and the details become mushy.
