The Newcomb 12 die variety of the 1828 Large Cent is very rare (46-60 known). With the exception of one remarkable Mint State coin, all examples of this variety are circulated. The best example is finer than all the others by a whopping 15 points in the Noyes Census (and an even more impressive 30 points in the Bland Census) -- PCGS calls this coin MS64BN. Consequently, no Red-Brown or Red examples are known.
The reason for the rarity of this variety appears to be a dramatic split in the obverse die, resulting in at least one coin with a raised, diagonal crack that runs the entire length of the coin from 1 o'clock to 6:30.
