The 1801 LM-1 Half Dime is one of the rarest die varieties in the series. In fact, the variety was unknown until 1986, when Dr. Eric Gutscher purchased the first known example as a mis-attributed V-2 (known today as LM-2) in a 1986 Stack's auction. Today, only six examples have been confirmed, most of which are in poor condition or damaged. Dr. Gutcher's coin was sold in 2015 as a VF with environmental damage. No better examples are known.
