Jaime Hernandez:

In 2008 the U.S. Mint tried to capture Asians and Asian Americans interest by producing a special 2008 dated Buffalo Celebration coin.

The 2008 One Ounce Celebration Buffalo coins were released in conjunction of the Lunar New Year which began on February 7th. The coins were specially packaged in a red velvet gift box as an enticement to prospective buyers from different nationalities.

Since, the coins were from the year 2008, the Mint made an attempt to market the coins to Asian individuals in specific, as their culture believes the 8 digit is a lucky number.

The 2008 Celebration coins were originally offered by the U.S Mint on February 05, 2008. Each coin was priced at $1,018.88. There were approximately 25,000 coin sets sold. There is no difference between a regular non Celebration Coin to that of a Celebration coin, except for the packaging. Therefore, PCGS did not recognize these coins any differently or did not implement any special programs or insert labels for the Celebration coins.
