Ron Guth:

Though described as a Die Trial, this piece was made privately outside the mint using a discarded dime obverse from 1804. The host coin is an 1838 Large Cent, determined by the cataloger at Heritage in 2008 to be of the Newcomb 1 variety. The overpunching created numerous fissures in the copper surrounding the dime design. The "smearaing" of the denticles on the lower left side of the dime indicate that the dime die was punched into the Large Cent at a fairly steep angle, which also caused the Large Cent to assume an oval shape.

Two examples are known - this, and the Judd plate coin, which is better-centered on a round, copper blank.
