Jaime Hernandez: The 2008-W $5 Uncirculated Gold Buffalo is a one-year type coin. Carrying the familiar buffalo design, it was the first uncirculated $5 coin ever sold by the U.S. Mint. It’s composed of 24 kt pure gold. The $5 Gold Buffaloes were sold as a single-coin option or as part of a four-piece uncirculated set.

The four-piece set included $5, $10, $25 and $50 Uncirculated Gold Buffalo coins. They were all struck on special burnished planchets, distinguishable by the W mint mark. At the time of introduction on July 22, 2008, the Mint offered the individual $5 coins at $289.95 each, and the four-piece set at $1,959.95.
