BD-2 is one of five different die varieties of the 1880 Half Eagle and one of four varieties that have a blunt 1 in the date. This variety is considered to be scarce, but there are a number of nice survivors. We are aware of more than a dozen Mint State BD-2's, the finest of which is the PCGS MS64+ in the High Desert Collection. Second best is the D. Brent Pogue Collection PCGS MS64 that boasts a pedigree back to 1944 and which sold for $76,375 in 2015.
The strike quality on this variety varies, with some examples showing weakness in the strands of Liberty's hair near the center of the obverse. The sharpest examples will show strong stars on the obverse and bold arrow fletches on the reverse.
