P. Scott Rubin: The 1787 New Jersey Goiter variety is named for the obvious die break under the horse's jaw on the obverse of all Maris 37 New Jersey Coppers as designated in Edward Maris’ 1881 book on New Jersey Coppers. The earliest die state of any Maris 37 obverse is combined with the Maris f designated reverse die and even these earliest-detected die state examples show the Goiter shaped die break.

The Maris 37 obverse die is known combined with four different Maris reverse dies; they are J, X, Y and f. The Maris 37-J is a rare variety with between 31 and 45 examples known; the highest grade known is a nice Extremely Fine. The Maris 37-X is a very rare coin and the rarest of the Goiter variety issues; it is believed that between 13 and 18 examples are known with a single specimen grading Very Fine being the finest known. The Maris 37-Y is a rare coin with between 45 to 60 examples believed to exist yet, like the M 37-X, the finest known is a single Very Fine example. The Maris 37-f is a very scarce variety with three known specimens grading Extremely Fine followed by at least three in Very Fine condition. The Maris 37-f is the most common die combination used with the Goiter obverse.

While this is an easy variety to identify because of the large Goiter break, this is still a scarce variety and not easily found.
