P. Scott Rubin:
The 1788 New Jersey Copper “Running Fox” after the legend variety with the fox seen on the right side of the reverse of the coin is one of the rarest in the entire series of New Jersey Coppers. It is represented by two die varieties known by the Maris designations of 76-cc and 77-cc.
There are only four known coins of the M 76-cc they have estimated grades of VF+,VF,VF and F (as per the new book “New Jersey State Coppers” by Roger S. Siboni, John L. Howes and A. Buell Ish, published by ANS and C4, in 2013)
The M 77-cc is even rarer with on two coins known with estimated grades of VF- and F by the same source as above.
The 1788 “Running Fox” variety rivals the much better known New Jersey Copper variety the 1786 “Date Under Plow Beam”, as the rarest of the series. This version of the “Running Fox” variety has only recently been added as a separate listing in “A Guide Book of United States Coins”.
