Ron Guth:

Only one Proof 1838 Seated Liberty Quarter Dollar is known to exist. This unique item first appeared in a 1954 Stack's auction and has appeared on the market only three times since then. Between 1957 and 2013 (over half a century), the coin was sequestered in an unknown collection. For a short time, this coin was one of the highlights of the Gene Gardner collection, who paid a record price for it in 2013.
