The 2016-W Nancy Reagan First Spouse $10 Gold Coin

Issued on July 1, 2016, the 2016-W Nancy Reagan $10 Gold Coin (MS #609219, PR #609220) marked the third and final release of the First Spouse series for that year. It remained the final issue of the program until 2020, when Barbara Bush was honored. Although Rosalynn Carter passed away on November 19, 2023, followed by Jimmy Carter on December 29, 2024, coins honoring the pair have not yet been released.

The First Spouse $10 gold coins were produced by the United States Mint to complement the base-metal Presidential Dollar series. In addition to the gold coin, a 34mm bronze medal (#612510) featuring the exact same design was offered in the Mint's Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set.

The 2016-W Nancy Reagan First Spouse $10 Gold Coin was struck at the West Point Mint in two finishes: Uncirculated and Proof. From a total mintage limit of 10,000 pieces, the Mint sold 2,009 Uncirculated examples and 3,548 Proofs. Uncirculated examples have a satin finish. All Proofs were struck with mirrored fields and deep Cameo frost.

About Nancy Reagan (1921–2016)

Born Anne Frances Robbins in New York City, she later adopted the surname of her stepfather, neurosurgeon Loyal Davis. Under the professional name Nancy Davis, she pursued a successful career as a Hollywood actress, starring in films such as Donovan’s Brain (1953) and East Side, West Side (1949).

Her path crossed with Ronald Reagan in 1949 under unusual circumstances: she contacted him, then-President of the Screen Actors Guild, to clear her name after being mistakenly placed on a Hollywood communist blacklist. The two began dating and married in 1952.

Their marriage lasted over half a century until the former President’s death in 2004. While serving as First Lady, Nancy Reagan was most recognized for her dedicated advocacy against drug abuse. Her signature slogan, "Just Say No," became a defining cultural touchstone of the 1980s. Nancy Reagan passed away on March 6, 2016, just months before her commemorative coin was released.

The 2016-W Nancy Reagan First Spouse $10 Gold Coin was released on July 1, 2016 at and issue price of $845 for the uncirculated finish, and $865 for the Proof.
