1792 AE Token Washington President General Reverse, Plain Edge, BN (Regular Strike)

This Washington Cent variety is an unusual muling of a 1792 WASHINGTON PRESIDENT obverse with a GENERAL OF THE AMERICAN ARMIES reverse. This variety is known as Baker 59. The obverse appears to be the same one used on the 1792 Washington Half Dollars in silver, gold, and copper (Baker 20 and 21 with a heraldic eagle reverse). The reverse is the same one used on the WASHINGTON BORN VIRGINIA/GENERAL OF THE AMERICAN ARMIES varieties in copper and silver (Baker 22 and 60).

Fuld called this variety Rarity 8 ,"Only about 15 pieces known). We know of eight demonstrably different examples. Several of these Baker-59's show weakness in the center of the reverse, indicating either insufficient pressure when the coin was struck, or possibly a later state of the dies which sank in the center. The example with the most details is the one formerly owned by John Ford. The one with the best surfaces appears to be the NGC EF45 from the Eric P. Newman collection (this example also holds the price record for the variety).
