In 2021, the U.S. Mint introduced a refreshed version of the obverse design and a completely new reverse design for the American Gold Eagles. This is the first major design change since the beginning of the American Gold Eagle Program that started in 1986. The Mint produced examples with both reverse designs, the design from the year 2020 (Type 1) and the design introduced in 2021 (Type 2).
