Ron Guth:

In the first year of the new millenium, employees at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia produced 912 Proof Half Dollars. This would turn out to be the third largest mintage of the series (after 1892 and 1894). As a result, this is one of the more common Proof Barber Half Dollars and a great value for collectors. The overall production quality was excellent and, today, there are scores of Gems available for purchase. Superb examples are scarce but the PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census for this date starts at PR67. Approximately one fourth of the certified examples are Cameos, but less than four percent are Deep Cameos.
