The 1851 Schultz & Co. $5 is a very rare coin, with an estimated 15-20 examples known today. The finest numerical grade assigned to any of these coin is NGC MS62. This remarkable coin sold in eacrly 2014 and set a new price record for the date.
Early states of the die are perfect, but the die quickly developed a crack atop the letters of GOL on the reverse, which eventually broke off and appears as a massive cud on at least one example. This may explain why the coin is such a rarity today.
The dies are attributed to Albert Kuner, who worked with Schultz & Co. to provide dies for several of the private California minters.
