P. Scott Rubin: Judd-5, the 1792 Copper Birch Cent with Lettered edge with one Star is an extremely rare coin with only two specimens known at present. The Copper Birch Cents known as Judd-3, 4, and 5 were all struck from the same Obverse and Reverse dies. These three varieties differ in edge treatment. Judd-3 has a Plain Edge. Judd-4 is Lettered “TO BE ESTEEMED BE USEFUL”, with two stars on the edge: one between ESTEEMED and BE; the other after USEFUL. Judd-5 is Lettered “TO BE ESTEEMED BE USEFUL” with only single star following USEFUL. According to the January, 2015 Heritage FUN Sale catalog of the Donald G. Partrick Collection, the two Lettered Edge Birch Cents also differs in weight. In the case of Judd-4 the weight is closer to the 209 grain standard that was set in late 1792 while the Judd-5 specimens are heavier and closer to the 264 grain standard originally set by Congress earlier in 1792.

According to the 2015 Heritage FUN/Partrick Catalog the earliest pedigree for a Judd-5 specimen dates only as far back as 1946 when Stack’s reports the finer of the two coins coming from a San Francisco collector. This coin is now graded MS61 by NGC, while the only other specimen is graded FR2 by NGC and has a Heritage stated pedigree dating back to a Hollinbeck-Kagin Sale of October, 1958. It appears that the same Fair-(2) coin appeared in two earlier Hollinbeck Coin Company Sales run by A.M. and Paul Kagin -- their 1953 166th Sale and their 1956 202nd Sale where the coins appeared as lots 228 and 713 respectively. However, I believe it is possible that this lesser graded coin has a pedigree dating back to the S.H. and H. Chapman Sale of the W. M. Friesner Collection sold April 5th, 1888. I base this on the matching grade and weight of the coin sold by the Chapmans and that stated by Heritage in the Partrick catalog.

This variety of Birch Cent has the edge inscribed " TO BE ESTEEMED BE USEFUL* " and there are only two known specimens. One specimen is very worn. Its estimated grade is FR02 and it was sold in the January, 2009 Heritage auction for $86,250. The finest known specimen is an estimated grade EF45/AU50 coin. It was in the Norweb collection and sold in the November, 1988 Norweb auction for $59,400.
