Charles Morgan:

The 1809 Classic Head Half Cent, C-1

Rarity 4+ | Eckberg 2-B. The C-1 is the rarest die marriage of the 1809 Half Cent (#1123), with an estimated surviving population of around 60 coins according to experts like Bill Eckberg. While its scarcity was somewhat overestimated through the 1980s, it remains unknown in Mint State — notably, the C-1 die marriage was absent even from the legendary D. Brent Pogue Collection.

Die Diagnostics

  • Obverse 2: Normal Date, with the tops of 809 forming an even plane.
  • Reverse B: Top leaf rests directly below the right border of the S in STATES; the letter F in OF is positioned at 1 o'clock.
