Production of Shield Nickels in 1882 was huge -- to the tune of almost 11.5 million pieces. This was the largest production in a dozen years, and only four dates (1866, 1867, 1868, and 1869) have higher mintages. As might be expected, this is a very common date, and one that is easy to locate in all conditions except MS67.

Luster ranges from satiny to prooflike. Die cracking is seen frequently, but not to the severe degree on some of the preceding dates. Overall, this is a good choice for type collectors who seek an affordable, high-grade example of a Shield Nickel.
