One variety of the 1858 Half Dime consists of a quite obviously doubled date. The engraver punched the first date way too high in the die, then repunched the date in the proper position. No attempt appears to have been made to obliterate the original punching, as the underdate is quite clear, even on circulated examples. Undertypes can be seen on each digit of the date (see close-up illustration above).

Condition Census information is sparse, but the best example of this variety appears to be Eugene Gardner's PCGS MS64 that sold in 2014 for $2,115.
