Heritage Auctions, July 12, 2012, Lot 4101 - $633. Faint rose-colored patination blankets this otherwise brilliant example. The 1934-D Washington Quarter, Heavy Motto, Small D (FS-501, #407910) is a celebrated Cherrypickers' Guide variety. It features the compact "Small D" mintmark carried over from the 1932-D Washington Quarter (#5791). This mintmark is notably smaller and more condensed than the "Normal D" style that debuted in 1934. The transition to the larger punch was likely prompted by the smaller design's tendency to clog during striking. Notably, the Small D is not known to exist paired with the more common Medium Motto (#5796) obverse. This may indicate that its use in this context was accidental.
