Charles Morgan:

The 1934-D Washington Quarter, Heavy Motto, Small D, FS-501

The 1934-D Washington Quarter, Heavy Motto, Small D (FS-501, #407910) is a celebrated Cherrypickers' Guide variety. It features the compact "Small D" mintmark carried over from the 1932-D Washington Quarter (#5791). This mintmark is notably smaller and more condensed than the "Normal D" style that debuted in 1934. The transition to the larger punch was likely prompted by the smaller design's tendency to clog during striking. Notably, the Small D is not known to exist paired with the more common Medium Motto (#5796) obverse. This may indicate that its use in this context was accidental.

Heavy Motto Pickup Points

  • The "N": The top-left serif of the N in "IN" terminates at a sharp, upward angle.
  • The "G": The vertical serif at the base of the G is blunted and thick.
  • The "W": A key diagnostic; the center peak of the W extends higher than the flat tops of the left and right legs.
  • Symmetry: The S in "TRUST" appears more symmetrical than on the Medium Motto.
  • The "T"s: The first T in "TRUST" features shorter, more centered arms compared to the second T.
