Series: U.S. Colonial Issues
PCGS AU58BN
The Non Vi Virtute Vici Copper is grouped with other New York issues because of the reverse legend Neo-Eboracensis (the Latin term for New York). This issue has also been tied with certain Vermont coppers because of the matching shape of the A punch, and the date ties it to the New jersey series. Tradition has it that the obverse figure is a portrait of George Washington, but the similarity is tenuous; nonetheless, it is included in Baker's "Medallic Portraits of Washington" as Baker 13.
This is a rare issue that seems to have circulated well. The best example appears to be Eliasberg:56, catalogued in 1996 as MS-63 or finer. Others range in grade from corroded Fine to choice AU. Sometimes, these come on clipped or mal-formed planchets and they are rarely found properly centered.
