Ron Guth:

1788 Massachusetts Cents come in two major varieties: With a Period following MASSACHUSETTS or No Period. Of the two varieties, the No Period is the rarer by far. It seems that of all the dies used to strike the 1788 Massachusetts Cents, the only one without a period is Reverse N (though the unique Ryder 12-H may be another, if we get a chance to examine it).

Most all of the No Period 1788 Cents are circulated. We know of only three Mint State examples, all once owned by the great Colonial coin collector, Donald Partrick. One is in an NGC MS63BN holder and two grade out at NGC MS64BN.
