Ron Guth:

The Washington funeral medals were issued to memorialize the death of America's first president at two funeral processions held in Boston in 1800. At a time when the means of communication were limited, badges and medals were popular means of conveying information and sentiments. Most funeral medals were made of tin and virtually all are holed at the top for wearing on a ribbon. A smaller number of silver versions were made, all of which are quite rare. However, the most desirable of all are the gold Funeral medals. Rulau/Fuld claim "18 to 20 pieces known".
