On the vast majority of the New Jersey Copper varieties, the horse's head faces to the right. However, in 1788, some varieties show the head facing left. The reason for this reversal is unknown.
Three varieties comprise the Head Left designation: Maris 49-f, Maris 50-f, and Maris 51-g. In terms of rarity, the Maris 50-f is the least rare, followed by the rare Maris 49-f, then the very rare Maris 51-g. High grade examples are elusive and most examples have a hard time making the XF45 grade. The finest example is the Prooflike Uncirculated Maris 50-f from the Garrett Collection that sold in 1980.
