1872 25C J-1197, CAM (Proof)

Judd 1197 is an aluminum version of the highly popular 1872 Amazonian 25C pattern, which is known in copper, silver, and aluminum, Of the three metals, the aluminum version is the most rare, with only two examples currently known to exist. Both of the known examples have been rated PR64CAM by PCGS, both are illustrated above, and both are owned by mega collector, Bob Simpson. Choosing between the two is a toss-up. One has some alloy streaks across the bottom of the obverse and the other has some discoloration on the right side of the reverse. Even with those flaws, both coins are amazing and the design is one of the most famous of all American designs. The obverse features a semi-nude figure of a seated woman, often likened to an Amazonian warrior, but the figure is more likely that of Miss Liberty (though the word LIBERTY is absent from the design). The female figure appears to be petting the head of an American eagle as she supports a long sword in her other hand.
