The 1877-S over Horizontal S Quarter Dollar is an interesting, easily attributed variety caused when the engraver accidentally sank the S mintmark sideways into the die. The underlying S can be seen on the left side of the final S. Experts estimate that as many as 500 or more examples exist of this variety. Collectors will be able to find circulated examples with ease, but cherry-picking the variety will not be easy because it is so well-known. Mint State versions are very scarce in the MS-62 to MS-64 range and exceedingly rare in higher grades. The finest example certified by PCGS as of March 2011 is a single MS-66.
