P. Scott Rubin: The 1788 Vermont Copper Bust Right, Backwards C, is a very rare issue with less than thirty specimens known. This is the Ryder or RR-30 variety and is the only Vermont to use the obverse die with a backwards C in AUCTOTI. This variety is an example of very poor placement of almost all the letters on the obverse die. Some are double cut, some almost overlap other letters, but the most obvious defect is the letter C which was punched upside, thus creating a reverse C.

Because of the strike of the coins and the fact that most of the known specimens are struck on small planchets, the Backwards C is not even visible on a number of specimens. The best way to identify this variety is to look at the letters VERMON on the obverse, the V is double cut and the M seems to be cut into the letter O.
