The 1865 Plain 5, Die Clash Variety
The FS-401/901 Die Clash (#569400-569402) occurred when the obverse and reverse dies struck one another without a planchet between them. The force of this impact transferred design elements from one die to the other, leaving a "clash" image on subsequent coins struck by those dies. The most prominent diagnostic features for the FS-401/901 include:
- Obverse: An inverted "2" from the reverse design clearly visible within the center of the shield.
- Reverse: Horizontal shield lines transferred into the fields bordering the "2 CENTS" denomination.
This is a 'naked-eye' cherrypick for the observant collector.
