Ron Guth:

J-223a combines two different reverse dies, one ground down so heavily that most of the details have been obliterated. The catalogers of the Lemus coin confirmed that the ground down reverse was Reverse B of 1859, the so-called "broken ribbon" die. Both dies were created by Anthony Paquet. This unusual piece was once listed as a Die Trial in the Judd reference, but in recent editions has been elevated to full pattern status. Most researchers consider this a fantasy piece, struck not for technical purposes at the mint, but to create a rarity for sale to collectors.
