Judd 1741 is an aluminum version of an 1885 Three-Cent piece. It has been called a die trial, but it is more likely a novelty struck for sale to collectors. According to Saul Teichman at www.uspatterns.com, these were made for inclusion in a complete set of U.S. coins in aluminum. We know of two Judd 1741's, but there may be additional examples revealed among the several auction citations.
