The RR-3 (#800845) is the second of the two VERMONTS landscape varieties. Identification is straightforward: the top right sun ray points to the right of the period after the S in RES. Additionally, the bottom right of the plow's base on RR-3 terminates just to the right of the flag of the 5. Finally, a definitive die defect above the interpunct to the right of the date serves as a primary identifier for this variety. Numismatist Tony Carlotto called this the most intriguing coin in the landscape series. Planchet quality and shape are highly variable, with many examples known to be somewhat oblong. The apparent experimentation in the striking of this die marriage may indicate that it preceded the RR-2, although the wide range of known weights points to a later emission.
