The 1895 Barber Quarter Proof

The installation of the United States Mint’s first hydraulic press in 1893 brought little noticeable change to the appearance of Proof coinage. Three years after introducing the new equipment, the 1895 Proof Barber Quarters (#5681) maintained a character virtually identical to those struck in the series' inaugural year. With a mintage of 880 pieces, the 1895 issue is relatively common for the 24-year Barber Quarter series. While mintages were slightly higher in 1892 (#5678) and 1900 (#5686), the difference in availability is negligible to collectors. Although many surviving specimens have been cleaned, original examples exhibit impressive quality, featuring mirror-like fields and, occasionally, strong Cameo contrast on the devices. A key diagnostic for this issue is a distinct staff-shaped lint mark stretching from the nose to the eye.
