Charles Morgan:

The 1995 American Silver Eagle

1995 proved to be a quiet year for American Silver Eagle bullion coin production. Following the 1994 mid-term elections, investors saw greater opportunity in a surging stock market than in precious metals. Consequently, silver prices flatlined throughout most of the year, averaging $5.20 an ounce.

The 1995 Silver Eagle (#9886) falls squarely in the middle of a three-year low-mintage run. Mintages dropped to a then-record low of 4,227,319 coins in 1994 (#9876), followed by 4,672,051 in 1995, before reaching an all-time series low of 3,603,386 in 1996 (#9900). Production remained subdued through 1998 (#9929) before the Y2K surge broke the drought in 1999 (#9947).
