Upcoming Coin Auctions

At PCGS, we not only grade and authenticate some of the greatest coins, many of which eventually cross the block of major auctions. So, every month or so we browse upcoming major auctions and cherry pick some of the sales that feature these extraordinary coins. This time we wanted to share two major upcoming auctions with lots of amazing coins. The first sale is the Heritage Auction event ending on December 5, 2022, “U.S. Coins in Early Holders Auction,” which contains many great coins encapsulated in older PCGS holders. The second sale we are highlighting is the Legend Regency Auction #56, concluding on December 8, 2022, and featuring several great collections and individual coins across different series.

Heritage Auctions - U.S. Coins in Early Holders Auction
Ending December 5, 2022

On December 5, 2022, Heritage Auctions will host an auction consisting of many coins encapsulated in vintage PCGS holders. Some of the holders are the so-called “rattler” holders from the 1980s, some are the old green PCGS holders from the 1990s, and many of these coins have been inside their holders for over 30 years!

$10 1875 Liberty Head Eagle PCGS VF30

One of the featured coins is an 1875 Liberty Head Eagle graded PCGS VF30. According to the Heritage Auctions description, this coin has not been sold in an auction since 1998. It’s estimated that about a dozen examples exist for this rare issue, making it an extremely rare coin. The coin is encapsulated in an older green PCGS holder. Bidding should be strong for this significant rarity.

1932-D Washington Quarter PCGS MS64

Another coin in the sale is a 1932-D Washington Quarter graded PCGS MS64. It is a key date in the Washington Quarter series that is encapsulated in an old PCGS rattler holder. The coin shows great detail, looks completely original, and appears almost mark free. A great example for collectors who need to add this key date coin to their set.

$2-½ 1830 Quarter Eagle PCGS AU55

Another coin in the sale is an 1830 Quarter Eagle. It is graded in an older green PCGS holder. The coin has a grade of PCGS AU55, and the surfaces still have lots of luster remaining as well as exhibit a nice, sharp strike on both the obverse and reverse. It's a nice coin that should attract lots of attention.

Legend Regency Auction 56
Ending December 8, 2022

Legend Auctions is also offering a plethora of spectacular coins. Some of the highlights are the Xanno Collection of Mint State Indian Cents, the So-Cal Collection of Matte Proof Lincoln Cents, the San Diego Collection of Capped Bust Half Dollars, and the R.S. Collection featuring many different high-caliber coins and encompassing several different series.

1803 Draped Bust Dime PCGS MS64 JR-3

In the sale there is an 1803 Draped Bust Dime graded PCGS MS64. It is a high-grade example, with the next-closest grade being in XF40 for the scarce JR-3 variety. A great opportunity for collectors to obtain a rare variety in the highest-obtainable grade.

$20 1870 PCGS PR66CAM+ Struck in Aluminum

For the next coin, please don’t change the settings on your screen, thinking that the colors aren’t displaying correctly, as most Liberty Head Doubles Eagles were normally struck in gold. However, some rare and unusual examples were struck in experimental metals. For example, there is this $20 1870 Liberty Head struck in aluminum that is being offered in the Legend Regency Auction Sale. The coin is graded PCGS PR66CAM+. It’s just an incredible coin. It’s estimated that four to seven examples were produced, making it extremely rare.

1909 VDB Proof Lincoln Cent PCGS PR66RB

Another highlight in the sale is a 1909 VDB Proof Lincoln Cent graded PCGS PR66RB. This is the key coin to the Matte Proof Lincoln Cent series and usually the stopper when it comes to building a Matte Proof Lincoln Cent set. The current example being offered at the Legend Regency auction has clean fields and surfaces, with lots of attractive red remaining. This is a coin that should command lots of attention and bidding.
