PCGS Set Registry Update
Guatemala won its freedom from Spanish rule on September 15, 1821. The first silver peso was struck for the country in 1859, and it portrays Rafael Carrera. Carrera was a brilliant military strategist who was a good problem solver. He ruled Guatemala for a little over 18 years and unified the country for further success. The second silver peso that was issued for the country was in the year 1872 that displays a woman seated which represents Guatemala. This design is exceptionally elegant and the reverse displays the revered quetzal bird at the top. This crown-sized coin is popular with collectors, and the early dates are difficult to find. Shown above is the 1897 peso that is part of the Guatemala Silver Peso Seated Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1872-1897) that PCGS has recently listed.
