Napoleon Bonaparte had his hands full in Europe, and the Haitian Revolution severely diminished the value of his North American holdings, leading to a bargain-basement price that Thomas Jefferson could not pass up. A century later, Farran Zerbe, a relentless promoter of all things numismatic, was entrusted with selling the Mint's first commemorative gold coins at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Demand fell far short of expectations, and roughly 86% of the mintage was ultimately returned to the Treasury for melting. Still, the pair of gold dollars -- one featuring Jefferson and the other the recently slain William McKinley -- found an appreciative audience decades later, when the classic commemorative boom introduced a new generation of collectors to America's often misunderstood and maligned classic commemorative era.   Read more.

PCGS Set Registry Update

Queen Elizabeth II ruled Great Britain for 70 years until her death in 2022 at the age of 96. She was officially crowned as Queen of England on June 2, 1953, at Westminster Abbey in London at the age of 27. No expense was spared, and the cost of her crowning ceremony, in today's dollars, would total nearly $54,000,000! When she became the longest-reigning monarch in England in 2015, the Queen made the following statement: "Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones, my own is no exception, but I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness.” Queen Elizabeth II's portrait appeared on more coins than any other person in history to date, a record unlikely to be surpassed. In 2021, The Perth Mint of Australia commemorated her 95th birthday by releasing the brilliant coin seen above. It is part of the 2021 Australian One Dollar Circulation Strikes Aluminum Bronze Perth Mint Year Set for collectors to consider building.
