The 1848-O has the second largest mintage of any Half Dollar of the 1840's. Nonetheless, it is just scarce enough to avoid being labelled a "type" coin, and collectors might have a hard time locating one in nice condition. Mint State examples are definitely scarce and they don't come nice. Most appear in either MS62 or MS63and Gems are very rare. Obviously, this date was not saved by many collectors back in the mid to late 1800's as no Superb examples have come to light. The strike quality can be an issue on the 1848-O Half Dollar, but there are some examples that are struck very sharply.
