Ron Guth:

The 1849 Half Dollar is relatively common and is usually considered a "type" coin, though a small premium is attached to grades above Extremely Fine. Numerous Mint State examples exist, usually in the range of MS62 to MS64. Gems are very, very rare.

One of the more interesting varieties of this date shows a widely repunched date (FS-301, WB-102). Traces of each of the original digits can still be seen to the left of the final placement. The repunching is visible even on lower grade examples and it is still possible to cherrypick this variety.
