The 1863 1C J-300 utilizes the regular dies of 1863 on a Copper-Nickel planchet, but with a reeded edge (instead of the normal plain edge). Saul Teichman (www.uspatterns.com) calls these fantasy pieces, which is probably accurate since reeded edge Cents were never seriously considered, nor were Copper-Nickel cents ever in danger of being "clipped" as were the silver and gold coins. The Judd-300 is found with either a high date or a low date in both Proof and Uncirculated versions. The low date version appears to be the scarcer of the two, though both types are difficult to locate. Images of both versions appear above.
