Ron Guth:
The 1882 Half Dollar has a moderately large mintage compared to the other Half Dollar dates of the 1880's but, by any other standard in any other series, this is a rare date. Only 8,400 coins were made for circulation along with 1,355 Proofs. For some reason, the 1882 Half Dollar has a total certified population that is among the lowest of the 1880-1890 period, with only the 1885 having a slightly lower population. MS63 and MS64 are the most frequently-seen grades at the Mint State level. Gems are slightly rare and Superb examples are true condition-rarities. To give an idea of how desirable the best examples are, the PCGS MS68 (later in the Eugene Gardner Collection) sold for $74,750 in 2010!
